Each year HakiElimu runs competitions that ask you what you think about issues in education in Tanzania. So far we have held 4 competitions on quality of education, governance in education, corruption in education and the fourth one on disability and education.

The questions of the competitions were as follows:

  • First competition: "What is a good school ?" & "What is a bad school ?"
  • Second Competition: "Is your voice heard in school?"
  • Third Competition "What kinds of corruption are common in education ? " & "What practical measures can be used to prevent or fight corruption in education? "
  • Forth Competition “Explain the problems that face people with disabilities in education & give concrete examples on how these problems can be addressed”

The competitions are open to people of all ages in Tanzania. We received over 1074 entries for the first competition; over 700 for the second, about 3000 entries for the third and again about 3000 entries for the fourth competition.

A booklet on the first competition, "What is a good school?" and third competition “What kinds of Corruption in Education are common in Education?” were produced and circulated. They included the entries of all the best entries. The booklet for the forth competition Disability and Education Competition is on its final preparation.

The booklets focused on issues raised by the entrants to stimulate debate and discussions and also detail how the competitions were assessed.

The winners in each of the first four competitions received 100,000 Tanzanian Shillings for themselves and 100,000 Tanzanian Shillings for a school of their choice. The same principle will be applied to the fifth competition.
